The report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), established to investigate the legitimacy of the downfall of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government, has today been published in Dhivehi.

The report was first published in English in August 2012.

The Commission was set up to investigate the following: the events that transpired in the Maldives from 14 January to 8 February 2012, the change of government on 7 February 2012, whether the resignation of the then President Nasheed was illegally coerced, and whether the government changed legally on 7 February 2012.

The report, published in August after seven months of investigation, said that the change of President in the Maldives on 7 February 2012 was legal and constitutional, and that the resignation of President Nasheed was voluntary and of his own free will and not caused by any illegal coercion or intimidation.

The Commission interviewed 293 witnesses, of which 15 were interviewed more than once.
The CNI was composed first of three members. Two members were added later, who were retired Judge of Singapore Supreme Court G.P. Selvam as Co-chair and Ahmed Saeed as a representative of former President Nasheed.

Saeed criticised the work of the Commission and resigned less than 24 hours prior to the publication of the report.

Nonetheless, former President Nasheed has said that he accepts the report, with the concerns raised by Saeed.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the report has been accepted by all countries around the world.
