Britain's Adam Peaty wins 100 breaststroke at worlds

KAZAN, Russia (AP) — Adam Peaty of Britain has given Britain its first gold medal in the pool at the world swimming championships with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke Monday night.

Former world record holder and current Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa led at the turn under Peaty's pace set in April. But Peaty overtook him in the closing meter, getting his hand on the wall in 58.52 seconds for the gold. Van der Burgh was second in 58.59. Peaty's teammate, Ross Murdoch, took third in 59.09.

Peaty broke van der Burgh's 2012 world mark earlier this year to become the first man in history under 58 seconds in the event.
