Dengue fever spreading at alarming rate, says Health Minister

Minister of Health Iruthisham Adam has said that dengue fever is spreading at an alarming rate across Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference at Ministry of Health today, Iruthisham said that 125 cases have been reported in Malé, and 249 cases in islands excluding Malé.

She called on relevant authorities to initiate efforts to control mosquitoes.

Speaking at the press conference, Dr Ahmed Faisal said that a record number of dengue fever cases have been reported this year, and the worst affected region is Alifu Atoll.

He said that the disease causes high fever which will subside after three days.

“The fever may subside but if you have other symptoms such as bleeding and lethargy, you should consult a doctor immediately. This is the most dangerous stage of dengue fever. The best thing to do is to drink plenty of fluids and rest. No medicine should be taken except paracetamol to bring down the fever,” he said.
