Venus Williams beats Wozniacki to reach Miami Open quarters

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — A resurgent Venus Williams defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 7-6 (1) Monday to reach the Miami Open quarterfinals.

Seeded 16th, Williams is a three-time Key Biscayne champion, but her most recent title here came in 2001. She's into the quarterfinals at the tournament for the first time since 2012.

Williams could meet her sister Serena in the final. Serena, who has won the tournament a record seven times, defeated 2006 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3.

Venus Williams swung with her typical aggressiveness from the baseline, hitting 40 winners to nine for her fourth-seeded opponent. Williams also won 14 points at the net.

She improved to 7-0 against Wozniacki and is 4-0 this year against top-10 opponents.
